This Privacy Policy explains how Deen Companion ("the App", "we", "us") handles information when you use our mobile application. We built Deen Companion to work almost entirely on your own device, and this policy reflects that: we do not require an account, and we do not operate a backend server or database that stores your personal data.
Deen Companion does not have user accounts, sign-in, or profiles. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other identity information, because the App never asks for it.
If you use the Prayer Times or Qibla Direction features, the App requests access to your device's location
(ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION and ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION on Android) so it can:
Your coordinates are sent to the Aladhan API (see Section 3) solely to calculate prayer times, are cached on your device so the App doesn't need to ask again every time, and are not stored on any server we control, linked to an identity, or used for advertising or tracking. You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings — the rest of the App will continue to work normally.
When you tap the heart icon to favorite a Surah, Hadith, Name of Allah, or other content, or when you open/play something the App logs as "recent," that information is written to a local on-device database (Hive) using Android's app-private storage. It is never transmitted to us or to any third party. If you uninstall the App or clear its storage, this data is permanently deleted.
To avoid repeated network requests and let the App work offline, Quran, Hadith, Dua, and similar reference content fetched from our content providers is cached on your device. This is ordinary app content caching, not personal data about you.
We do not use any third-party analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising SDK in this version of the App. Standard diagnostic information (such as crash logs) may still be available to us through the Google Play Console, which is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
The limited information described above is used only to:
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the App's core features.
Deen Companion fetches religious reference content from third-party APIs over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. We do not send them your name, email, or any account identifier — because we don't have one to send.
| Service | Purpose | Data sent |
|---|---|---|
| Aladhan API | Prayer times, Hijri calendar & date conversion | Your approximate location coordinates (only when you use Prayer Times/Calendar features) |
| UmmahAPI (and similar Islamic content APIs) | Quran, Hadith, Dua, and Names of Allah content | No personal data — content requests only |
These are independent services with their own privacy practices. We encourage you to review their policies if you'd like more detail on how they handle request data on their end.
| Permission | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Internet | To fetch Quran/Hadith/Dua content and prayer times from our content providers. |
| Location (coarse & fine) | To calculate prayer times and Qibla direction for where you are. Optional — the App still works without it, but you'll need to enter/search a city manually where supported. |
| Notifications | To optionally remind you of prayer times, if you enable that feature. |
| Foreground service (media playback) | To keep Quran recitation audio playing reliably while the App is in the background or your screen is locked. |
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We do not use it for cross-app or cross-site tracking. The only outbound data flow is the location coordinates described in Section 1.2, sent directly to the Aladhan API for the sole purpose of returning prayer times to you.
Deen Companion is a general-audience educational and religious reference app and is not directed at children under 13 (or the relevant age of consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the App has no accounts and no data collection tied to identity, this risk is inherently low. If you believe a child has provided us information in a way this policy hasn't accounted for, contact us using the details below and we will address it.
All network requests made by the App use HTTPS encryption in transit. Locally saved data (Favorites, Recent Activity, cached content) is stored within your device's app-private storage sandbox, which other apps cannot access without device-level compromise (e.g., root access).
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR (EEA/UK) or CCPA/CPRA (California) regarding personal data, including the right to access, correct, or delete it, and the right to object to certain processing. Because Deen Companion does not collect or store personal data on our servers, most of these requests are already satisfied by the fact that your data lives only on your device — you have full control by using the in-app delete options or by uninstalling the App. If you have questions about a specific right, contact us below.
The App can be used worldwide. Any data sent to third-party APIs (Section 3) may be processed in countries other than your own, subject to those providers' own safeguards.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example as we add new features (such as cloud sync or accounts, if that ever happens — in which case this policy will be updated first to describe exactly what changes). We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the revised policy.
